Do you live by lists? They can really be a great help when it comes to prioritizing things in your life. You can improve your productivity, stop forgetting things, and most importantly, avoid becoming discouraged. Seriously, if you made a list of everything that needed to be done in your house, you’d probably just throw your hands in the air and give up! A long to-do list can be very overwhelming. It’s important, not only to prioritize, but to minimize so that you can concentrate on manageable tasks at hand.
1) Choose a small area to deal with. Here, we will discuss how to get your closet in order using a to-do list. We love lists. Once they’re set, you only have to do one little thing at a time. They help you to keep on track, finish what you’re working on, and ignore all of those pesky distractions that can rob you of your precious time and energy.
2) Look into your closet and determine which item should be your number one priority. Do you have a giant pile of shoes? Are your summer clothes still there, even though you’ve been in your winter clothes for a month? Do you have miscellaneous boxes of junk that’s been there so long you don’t even know what’s inside? If you can’t decide what should be first because the whole closet is cram packed with junk on top of junk, then your number one task should be to empty and throw away around half of what you own.
3) Once you’ve determined your task, set a timer to see what you can accomplish in a set amount of time. If it’s a big, time consuming task, then give yourself an hour. If it would take you longer than that, then you should break it down further. For example, a disorganized shoe pile could take a few minutes if all you have to do is mate and put them away. However, if you need to figure out which ones to keep, come up with a way to get them organized so that this doesn’t happen again, plus clean the floor underneath the pile, then you should add those things as individual tasks to your list.
4) Categorize to avoid your closet becoming such a mess again. As you clean and organize, keep categories in mind and arrange your closet accordingly. Arrange by color, length, type, or by how you use the garments. Whatever works best for you is what you should stick with.
